Self Defense Products Explained
Today, you don’t need to carry a gun to be or feel safe. There are many great self defense products that are non-lethal which can protect you just as well. These include pepper spray, stun guns, tasers, throwing stars, kubotans and personal alarms. All can be used in different circumstances, so lets explore a few.
A pepper spray is a self defense product used when the attacker is a few feet away, usually anywhere from 4-8 ft. The reason they must be 4-8 feet away is that the spray can only go about that far, and you want it to be about that range so you don’t accidentally spray yourself if the attacker is closer. Also if the attacker is too far, I wouldn’t spray them because then you will only anger them more and not be effective. A pepper spray affects the nervous system and the eyes, leaving the person blind and on the ground for about 30 minutes and leaves no lasting effects. Check the whether conditions before you decide to spray it, so it doesn’t come back in your face through the wind. These range from $8- $89.
Stun guns are the second most popular self defense products with pepper spray at number 1. These are great if the attacker is in close range, because the stun gun has to touch them and then it sends an electrical charge through their body. The person is paralysed for about 10 minutes, giving you ample time to run. Make sure you hit the attacker in the torso area only for your desired result. Otherwise it may not work so well. These range from $18- $69.
Tasers work similar to a stun gun, in that they shoot an electrical charge through the body. Instead of you having to put the product up to the person, you shoot out 2 cords at them and that is what electrocutes them. Tasers are the most expensive costing about $350 as opposed to $20-$60 for a stun gun or $10-$20 for a pepper spray, but they are the most effective.
There are other self defense products out there, but these three are the most commonly used. Depending on the situation is what you would use, so if you cannot afford a taser, I would suggest at least getting both a stun gun and a pepper spray. These can be found easily online.
